Before we get to today’s article, I just want to mention that am writing from the perspective of a man that has experienced many of the challenges of which I write…. and those spiritual battles continue daily. The articles are implications of what it means to obey the commandment to raise your children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. They require some reflection and are particularly for Christians who, as Peter would say, are diligently seeking to confirm their calling and are making every effort to supplement their faith. Said more succinctly, serious Christians. If you know other believers who desire to walk more faithfully with the Lord, please forward an article to them and tell them to sign up for future articles. Thanks so much!

My Wife Saved My Life.

I have been reading through the book of Genesis and upon arriving at chapter 2, I was forced to ponder versus 18 through 24. Let’s read it together so you will understand what I’m about to say. Beginning in verse 18, the Bible says:

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So, the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

If you are reading this you can see that I bolded 2 portions and if you’re listening, I will tell you that the first thing that jumped out to me was the verse, “it is not good that man should be alone; I will make a helper fit for him.”

Here we have straightforward and plain reason directly from God as he gives us the reason for his creation of a woman-“it is not good that man would be alone.” In God’s absolute knowledge, wisdom, and loving care for his creation, he knew that the man he created was a social being whose life would be incomplete without another person to exchange the God- like image of love, selflessness, care, and more. Furthermore, God created the woman to be a helper to him. This is where we get the modern day term called complementarianism. God created man with certain characteristics and God created woman in such a way that she would complement man in ways that would enhance his being.

This would seem to require that the woman, though different in some ways, would also have to be very much like the man and so God decides to literally take a piece of the man and fashion the woman. In verses 21 and 22, the Bible says, “So, the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.”

Then, in a grand final declaration of God’s purposes in creating the woman for man, verse 24 says, “Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Here, we have within just six verses from God’s word, at least two huge definitions of God’s intent for his creation. First, the plain fact that there are only two sexes, male and female, and secondly, marriage is a sacred bond between one man and one woman. Obviously, this is exactly what the devil has been raging about and trying to destroy and malign particularly in these last 60 years or so. However, even though it is tempting to rant about this current situation, that is not what this article is about.

As with everything else that we find in God’s word, we need to contemplate the meaning and purpose of God for us in our own personal lives. So, I began to think about Adam and Eve and their perfect marriage. I tried to imagine a marriage that had no arguments, had two completely selfless people, had agendas for their lives that was perfectly in sync, always behaving lovingly toward each other, and had no desire for any relationship that would not contribute to the perfection of the marriage in any way. And frankly, I cannot imagine it at all. Why? Because you and I live on the other side of what happened in the next few verses of chapter 3. That is, Adam and Eve sinned and as a result of that sin, their created perfect nature died, and they became people who were subject to the very same things that we are in our marriages today. That is, we are constantly battling against our own selfishness, pride, personal agendas, impatience, anger, and all sorts of lusts for things that we don’t have.

But even in this great and horrible change in the nature of every person who would be born from those original parents, God displays his sovereignty, power, and brilliance, in what he has done with every marriage that is imperfect or shall I say, every marriage.

As I thought about the verse that says God decided to make a helper for a man, I thought about some of the ways that my wife helps me, but it seemed like I began to focus on the ways that it seems she doesn’t. Sure, she has put her heart and soul into raising the children and keeping the home straight, but we sure have argued through the years and butted heads on different issues. In fact, it made me wonder why God directed the two of us to be married. I almost questioned his wisdom.

But then, I saw it and it was this: there was a handful of significant moments during our 45 years of marriage where I did not lead our household well. In fact, I will say that I made foolish decisions that impacted her and our family in serious ways. If she had not been willing to forgive me for my stupidity; if she had not been willing to stay the course in this one flesh marriage, my life would be very different from what it is today. In fact, it would be a sad ruin compared to what it is now. In a way, she saved my life and all of the negative things we’ve experienced through the years are nothing compared to the most important moments in which I now thank God for this particular woman.

Now, if you are a Bible believing Christian and are always looking to give God the glory like me, you may take issue with my statement that my wife saved me. Of course, I know that God was working in her heart and directing her to make the decisions that she made so He does get the ultimate glory. But, let’s not forget the examples throughout the New Testament where men and women are commended for doing things that brought glory to God and could have only been done by Christ working in them. So, we need not be afraid to commend those who have done good for God while we understand that in that last day, my wife will cast whatever crowns she has at the feet of Jesus.

There is a second way in which my wife has been involved in saving me. As mentioned earlier, there is no marriage that can be like Adam and Eve’s marriage before they sinned. We are all now saddled with a sin nature which pulls us into a love of self before anything else but before any Christian can get to heaven, he or she will go through the process of growing in holiness and becoming more like Christ during their time here on earth. This is a process that no Christian can avoid because God has stated his intent in Romans 8:29 and Hebrews 12:14 adds, “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

Seeing that the life of a Christian is a never ending battle against sin and striving to become more like Christ, we have to think about the greatest opportunities that God will use in our lives to grow us in Christ. My initial thought was that it might be some arena outside of the home such as the workplace, but the fact is it is in marriage we have our greatest moments to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. It is through years of decisions and discussions and children and all of the challenges that we face in life along with our spouse, that we find our spiritual victories and failures. So, there she is again. Due to her faithfulness, my wife saved me from a much poorer life and due to God’s brilliant design to sanctify sinners through marriage, God has used her to walk me to more Christlikeness.

Going back to the verses 18-24, I now read them with greater understanding and a greater appreciation for the absolute wisdom of God in all things, even in the things that may at times seemed not good for us. His plan is perfect. As a result of death being brought into the world by the sin of Adam and Eve, God makes a way for us to be made alive through the sacrifice of Jesus, and He sends the Holy Spirit to lead us through marriage and a life of greater holiness.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to Him that he might be repaid?” For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33-36)

I hope you will reflect on these verses and praise God for how He has used your spouse for His purposes in your life!

Dig deep, brothers and sisters, and I’ll see you next time.

If any cast off the study of these they cannot be safe here, nor happy hereafter.” Brooks believed that all Christians have particular weaknesses in their faith and those weaknesses would be exploited in some way by Satan.
