Before we get to today’s article, I just want to mention that am writing from the perspective of a man that has experienced many of the challenges of which I write…. and those spiritual battles continue daily. The articles are implications of what it means to obey the commandment to raise your children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. They require some reflection and are particularly for Christians who, as Peter would say, are diligently seeking to confirm their calling and are making every effort to supplement their faith. Said more succinctly, serious Christians. If you know other believers who desire to walk more faithfully with the Lord, please forward an article to them and tell them to sign up for future articles. Thanks so much!

The Problem Of Injustice.

As Solomon once said, there is nothing new under the sun. Unfortunately, one of the things in life that I wish would no longer be under the sun is instances of injustice.

Injustice is a lack of fairness and God hates it. Proverbs 17:15 says, “he who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the Lord.”

Injustice is also something God’s people detest because we have the mind of Christ. Proverbs 29:27 says, “an unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked.”

Of course, some might think that Christians should not be subject to injustice in this world but that simply is not God’s plan. Some of the greatest examples of injustice are found in the Old Testament. Think about David and Saul. Their relationship began with David defeating Goliath and essentially saving Saul’s Kingdom. And what does he get for that? After an initial good reception, Saul eventually becomes jealous of David and seeks to kill him. He hunts him throughout the land like a dog.

And what about Joseph? We all know the story about his own brothers selling him into slavery where this injustice is only beginning. He is also unjustly accused of trying to rape his boss’s wife and later, is unjustly forgotten by a man he helps get released from prison.

Or consider one of my favorites. Uncle Laban, the father of Leah and Rebecca, and how he did a wicked bait and switch on Jacob’s wedding night. But he wasn’t done with his injustices. He later broke promises to Jacob more than once and kept him captive for more than a dozen years. Every time I read that story, I fantasize about getting my hands on good ole Uncle Laban so I can share a little justice with him on behalf of Jacob.

By saying that, I give more than a hint about how I feel about injustice. Frankly, I can’t stand seeing people get away with it. That kind of attitude is nothing new under the sun for the Christian either. The writer of Psalm 73 says, “For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. Therefore, pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Their eyes swell out through fatness, their hearts overflow with follies. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Therefore, his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?”

Judging injustice

However, as those who suffer from the consequences of Adam and Eve sin, we must be careful to not judge things to be unjust unless we know all of the facts. I often have to catch myself as I rush to make a judgment call on any particular situation. I go through the questions that I must ask of myself such as, is there another side to the story? Am I being manipulated by one side or the other? What facts do I not have? Can I know a person’s motives? Did I experience the injustice firsthand or am I hearing about it only from others?

Proverbs 18:13 says, “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”

There are sufficient warnings in scripture to make me hesitate before I draw conclusions. Romans 2:1-4 says, “Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?”

Jesus Himself says, “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”

But even after asking myself those questions and reflecting on these warnings from scripture, there is still something deep inside me that screams, I want answers!

Some injustices are on a national scale but there are other injustices that are closer to home, maybe even in our own families. Speaking of the ones closer to your circle, you may choose to pursue the truth regarding an injustice. If so, you may choose to go to the parties involved in the alleged injustice seeking to learn the truth firsthand. Depending on the nature of the injustice, you may want to have someone go with you. Your approach should be filled with humility, your tone gentle, and your body language free from a projection of guilt.

Still Not Satisfied?

After you give careful thought and prayer to any situation where you find what you believe is injustice, and after you have garnered the truth of the matter, you may find that you have no power to stop the injustice. Finding yourself in that predicament, you may be tempted to become bitter and even question God. Again, this is not uncommon to men.

Consider Job, a righteous man whose life was decimated. Ironically, both Job and his friends missed the big picture. Job’s friends were trying to explain to Job justice had been done because of Job’s great hidden sins. On the other hand, Job was trying to connect why this tragedy had happened to him because he did not have great sins. Both Job and his friends were focused only on the behavior of Job, but what was actually happening was a much greater cosmic event that God was orchestrating. Job and his friends took a very wooden view of justice and did not allow for something other than justice going on. At the end of the book of Job, God does come to Job and gives him an answer, but the answer has nothing to do with justifying the reason for Job’s suffering. However, he did get an answer from God that justified God being God, and for that reason, there was no need to give an answer to Job’s questions about his suffering.

The Answer We Need To Trust In

The writer of Psalm 37 and the writer of Psalm 73 has clear answers for us. Both Psalmists are painfully observing injustice in the world around them and what appears to be not only a lack of justice toward them, but actual prosperity. But as they express their thoughts, they come to realize that the ultimate justice for injustice is the absence of a relationship with almighty God. The punishment for the wicked could not be any greater. We can be sure that all injustices will be addressed by God whether they be committed by the wicked, or even by those who are God’s people. The consequences that God brings will be different, but they will be perfectly just. What remains to be considered is our own behavior and thoughts in this matter.

Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 3:16-22, “Moreover, I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, even there was wickedness, and in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness. I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time for every matter and for every work. I said in my heart with regard to the children of man that God is testing them that they may see that they themselves are but beasts. For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity. All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return. Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down into the earth? So I saw that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his work, for that is his lot. Who can bring him to see what will be after him?”

Injustice will always be with us in this world. What matters for each of us is how we react to the injustice. Ultimately, we are commanded to leave injustice to the Lord. He says, vengeance is His, and not ours. As the children of God, we cannot behave like the beasts. Mindful of our weaknesses, we may seek to address injustice in this world in a way that honors God but remember that we will often encounter roadblocks to righting injustice. Such work is for God and God alone.

If any cast off the study of these they cannot be safe here, nor happy hereafter.” Brooks believed that all Christians have particular weaknesses in their faith and those weaknesses would be exploited in some way by Satan.
