Before we get to today’s article, I just want to mention that am writing from the perspective of a man that has experienced many of the challenges of which I write…. and those spiritual battles continue daily. The articles are implications of what it means to obey the commandment to raise your children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. They require some reflection and are particularly for Christians who, as Peter would say, are diligently seeking to confirm their calling and are making every effort to supplement their faith. Said more succinctly, serious Christians. If you know other believers who desire to walk more faithfully with the Lord, please forward an article to them and tell them to sign up for future articles. Thanks so much!

A Strictly Moral Person Versus True Christianity.

I have been greatly troubled by people I know who are extremely moral people but are not Christians. In this article I want to provoke you to think deeply about this issue. First, let’s look at the definition of a moral person from Webster’s Dictionary. It is quite straightforward, and it says a moral person is one who leads a moral life.

Immediately, I may be causing some confusion because you might say that every Christian is a moral person. By virtue of belief in God’s laws, precepts and instructions about all things that are right or wrong, it would seem that every Christian must be a moral person. I believe that is true. However, is every moral person necessarily a Christian? The answer to that question is no.

Think about Jesus teaching in Matthew 16. His encounter with the rich man forces us to consider the fact that we must be careful not to hold on to anything in this world and value it more than our relationship with God. The rich man obviously had money as his idol but what we also should see here was that he was apparently a very moral man. He answered without hesitation that he had kept all of the commandments Jesus mentioned.

If we look at Matt 19:16, The scriptures say, “And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.”

Let’s also refer to two other passages I think will be helpful in illustrating my point. In Matthew 7:21-23, Jesus says,” Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”

And finally, in Matthew, chapter 13, Jesus spoke of weeds that are in the field along with the wheat as a picture of false Christians being among the true Christians until the end of the age.

So clearly, there are people who are doing good things here on earth and from all appearances, are true Christians but they are not. What else can we say about the person who believes in doing the right thing but does not have Jesus as his Lord and Savior?

  • The strictly moral person is often admired and complimented for their behavior. He is somewhat indistinguishable from the true Christian and so is thought highly of by Christians. He is also admired and complimented by non-believers because they too seek to justify themselves before God by the good things they do.
  • The strictly moral person is often hated and mocked for his behavior by some non-believers because he reminds them that they are sinful. He weighs on their conscience so they may mock him by calling him names such as prudish, goody two-shoes, or even puritanical.
  • The strictly moral person is in the worst kind of trouble because he comforts his conscience by doing his good works rather than confessing his sins. In contrast, the Christian always has a sense that he is only moments away from a great failure before God and therefore gives thanks to God for keeping him and confesses his sins daily. The strictly moral person excuses his sins with words like, “such is life,” and buries the incident by pulling up his bootstraps and pursuing better works.
  • The strictly moral person reviews his life and if it has been fairly free from deep afflictions, he concludes that God is pleased with how he is running his life.
  • The strictly moral person’s understanding of what we call, “God’s common grace to all men” is often referred to as “everything will work out.” When affliction arises, the strictly moral person does not look to his own soul to see if God may be calling him or correcting him through affliction. Instead, he may claim his cool response to the affliction as another good work rather than cry out to God for deliverance.
  • The strictly moral person quiets his conscience any time he begins to feel true conviction by his flesh directing him back to his track record that tells him that he is doing well, and God must love him.
  • The strictly moral person relies on their moral behavior to ultimately be reconciled to God. When a person chooses to make themselves reconciled to God through some other way than the absolute belief that the only way is Jesus Christ, he commits the highest kind of insult and the greatest display of pride toward God. This is the person who has never been laid low by the horrible thoughts of his own sin, so he does not cry out to the Savior either one time for salvation, nor does he desperately seek God’s help daily because he is not aware that he can’t be sanctified apart from the work of the Holy Spirit. For those reasons, the strictly moral person speaks very little of Christ in their daily conversations. This is because their walk with God does not exist.
  • The strictly moral person often creates his own Christianity by being passionate about certain teachings of the Bible while others do not fit into their lives. Often the things that they avoid are God’s commands to not love the world, striving for holiness, or exhortations to deny self.

How do we minister to these people? How do we know who they are? Frankly, I do not have a good answer to that question. It is possible the Lord might reveal to you a professing Christian you know to be a strictly moral person. If that happens, I believe the best thing you can do is to gently walk him through the gospel and the absolute dependence on the mercies of God as if they had never heard the gospel.

What about you? Are you a Christian with morals or a moral person only? It is a lifesaving question that requires deep thought and those thoughts will be hard. We are working against our remaining flesh and Jerimiah reminds us in 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” So, why bother, right?

We bother because God thought it was important enough to have Paul write about it in 2 Corinthians 13:5, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”

Dig deep, brothers and sisters, and I’ll see you next time.

If any cast off the study of these they cannot be safe here, nor happy hereafter.” Brooks believed that all Christians have particular weaknesses in their faith and those weaknesses would be exploited in some way by Satan.
